Atheism and the Alt-Right

Atheism and the Alt-Right — English

Chris Stedman wrote an article a little while back, Too Many Atheists Are Veering Dangerously Toward the Alt-Right. A lot of atheists have voiced their opinion that Stedman was wrong (he isn't), I'm more interested in why he's right (he is). That is to say, why does movement atheism have such a strong far-right wing? Why have so many atheists who have sought out a community turned to the alt-right?

Orientalism

Orientalism - English

This is just a brief introduction to a topic that I suspect a lot of people don't know much about. Orientalism is the form of oppression experienced by Asians and Asian-Americans under white supremacy and imperialism.

I want to stress, I am in no way an expert in this topic. Not even a little. Not only do I barely scratch the surface here, but I probably get a lot wrong. I strongly recommend you look to actual experts to learn more. Here are some handy links.

Shoes Are Life

Shoes Are Life — English

Imagine some shoes. Everyone gets a pair of shoes at birth with the expectation that they'll grow into them.

And the work perfectly well for most people! They can walk, run, play... the shoes don't present them with any problems in any aspect of their lives. The majority of the population is happy and never thinks about their shoes.

They Want You Tired

They Want You Tired — English

They want you tired. They want you scared.

They want you to come home at the end of the day after working hours at your second job, too tired to protest changes to society, to life, to the laws, to wages...

They want you too scared to think. They want you to focus on the object of terror, not on them. They want you distracted.

So they want you angry. They want you to direct what little energy you have left against the detested, minorities, foreigners, safe targets. The objects of fear, hatred, disgust. They want you to only look to the church for hope. The hope of a perfect life after death. The hope of justice after death. The hope of happiness after death. All good things only after death.

They want you not to resist.

A Thoughtful Story

A Logical Parable — English

One time, when I was living in Arizona, I wanted to make a sandwich. Not randomly; I was hungry. And my cooking skill goes about as far as egg salad. Plus, I’d gone to the grocery store the day before (like a grown-up), and I wanted to eat some food. MY food.

Anyway, I’m pulling the sandwich fixin’s out of the fridge and there’s a problem: no mayonnaise. Which is strange, because I knew I’d bought mayonnaise. I recalled it very clearly. And my memory has always been excellent. So where was my damn mayonnaise? Maybe on a different shelf? Maybe hiding? Nope. Definitely not. All there was in my fridge was sandwich fixin’s, eggs, and beer.

Did somebody … steal my mayonnaise? See this look on my face? Yeah, I knew it was ridiculous. I mean, not entirely ridiculous. My friend Doug, when he was a kid, somebody broke into his house and, while stealing stuff, took a dump on the sofa. It’s not inconceivable that somebody could have broken into my apartment, taken the time to go through my fridge, and decided to just take the mayo.

So I turned around to look in my living room. All my stuff was still there. TV, XBox and PlayStation, games and movies. Well, damn, I guess I just remembered wrong. I turn back around and … there’s my mayonnaise on the counter.

Option the Third: I talk to myself and don’t pay attention to what I’m doing and had already gotten the mayonnaise out of the fridge.

The sandwich ended up being okay. Ham and cheddar, mayo and mustard. On white bread. But that’s not what I want to talk about.
